Most Common Playoff League Setup Mistakes

     Fantasy Postseason Staff

Although we have tried to make league setup as simple as possible, there are still some common pitfalls that hang up league commissioners as they set up their postseason fantasy leagues. Here are the most common mistakes that we see.

  1. Failure to activate Off-line leagues. Commissioners must 'activate' leagues that are using offline drafts (manually loading all the players) before scoring can start to accumulate. Leagues do not 'auto-activate' for offline draft leagues because many commissioners are often still filling out rosters a day or two after the playoffs start. League activation occurs under the league Admin menu, and should occur after rosters have been loaded. Note that this does not apply to Live draft - as they auto-activate and will automatically start to score after the draft completes.

  2. Setting Per-Round Multipliers to Zero. A Per-Round multiplier is a feature that is specific to postseason fantasy pools, and consequently sometimes commissioners do not know what to choose for this setting. A Per-Round multiplier is a value that fantasy scoring is multiplied by in a given playoff round. For example, if Tom Brady scores 25 points in the 2nd round of the playoffs and the multiplier for the 2nd round of the playoffs is set to 2, then the total score for Tom Brady in that round would be 50 fantasy points. The default value for all rounds of the playoffs is 1 but can be changed by commissioners. Sometimes a commissioner thinks that they do not want any multipliers - so they set these values to 0. What occurs next is simple math. All of the scores that occur in a round are multiplied by 0, leaving league managers scratching their heads as to why no scoring is occurring for their given league.

  3. Overestimating Player Pool Sizes. The player pool for the postseason is often considerably smaller than regular season fantasy leagues. You'll sometimes find that commissioners want to use the same roster settings as they use in the regular season. This can have disastrous results especially with positions like the QB or DEF in football. There are only 12 starting QBs and 12 starting DEFs in postseason fantasy football.  If your league is a 2 QB league or allows for the drafting of SuperFLEX or BENCH positions, then you could end up with a situation in a 12 team league where one manager is left without a QB or DEF. If a given commissioner is dead set on maintaining a larger roster, then they should seriously consider allowing players to be drafted more than once.
